How to choose an English 'Home Stay’.
At 3R English, we like to encourage students to develop their English skills and to be proactive. There are many ways students can do this, such as by consuming English media (TV, films, books, and online material), but why not consider having a totally immersive English experience and staying with an English-speaking host family?
These days, there are plenty of reputable online companies and agencies that will match you with a host family. These visits can be arranged for most needs, such as studying and living abroad, working holidays, or simply an educational short break.
3R English suggests that you choose an agency based on personal recommendation whenever possible and read their online reviews. The agency should be friendly and forthcoming with information and be able to answer any questions or concerns you might have, especially if you are sending your child away unaccompanied.
An area where Japan differs from the U.K. and many other countries is in its attitude and requirements for criminal background checks. It is mandatory in England, for example, that your ‘hosts’ are fully accredited with no negative history, especially with regard to children.
How to get the most out of your homestay experience.
As the saying goes, ‘When in Rome, do as the Romans do’.
For some students, being with a host family will be the first time they have been away from home. Feeling shy, lonely, or even scared are all normal reactions to being with strangers. However, your hosts will be used to this and will give you the time and space you need to settle in.
It will be tempting to comfort yourself with your smartphone and be alone, but this will not lead to a worthwhile experience.
Practise your English!
Speak, ask questions, and don’t be afraid of making mistakes! You will be amazed at how quickly your English will improve by using it all the time.
Watch TV in English, try to read a newspaper, or buy a book or magazine.
Try the local food. Yes, we know British food and some other countries don’t have the greatest reputation, but like most rumours, it’s often false.
For example, British cakes, puddings, lamb, beef, cheese, seafood, etc. are known and exported to many countries.
Visit the sights and local areas. Outside of Japan, especially in European countries, there are thousands of years of history still remaining today.
Learn the culture and practise the customs. Many visitors to Japan often remark how they find Japanese customs fascinating. I certainly did on my first few visits. Be adventurous and live as your hosts do.
Questions, questions. Questions…!
You will likely notice how English speakers communicate much more directly with each other when compared to the Japanese. People are more ’to the point’ and expect more information from the other person. Asking questions and listening to opposing opinions is normal. Disagreement is often seen as the start of a debate in England rather than the end of a conversation in Japan.
If you are studying with us at 3R English, you will already know that we teach in a very engaging and interactive style. Your lessons and experience with us will be excellent preparation for such an English homestay trip and give you a solid foundation to improve your skills while you are away.
